Last week, while I was shopping at Blue Bird Yarn & Fibercrafts in Sausalito, I met someone who worked at the Dharma Trading Company. I'd only ever viewed their on-line store which sells dyes and dyeable yarn so I was surprised when she told me that their store in San Rafael also sold oodles of yarn by various manufacturers.
I found this to be true as I walked into the store today. I figure I may as well visit as many North Bay yarns stores as I can find while I'm living here in the North Bay area. This was the view to my right as I walked in.
They carry a good variety of wool-free yarns. They have a huge selection of Tahki Cotton and Berroco Comfort and Paton's Canadian and Marble -- in just about every color of the rainbow. They had lots of novelty yarns (they are making a come back) and hemp, linen, lots of cotton...it was fun to explore the shop and find one wool-free yarn after another.
At the back of the store, you step down into this room which has all the materials you could ever need for dying cotton, silk, wool and so much more. I didn't go down the dye-it-yourself road today. That's a whole other trip of it's own. You can find most of these products for sale on-line.
While I was there, I did buy some AllHemp for Knitting and some Tahki cotton in colors I was looking for and I got a nice skein of Misti Alpaca's Tonas Pima Silk for another holiday gift. So, it was a most successful field trip. And if you are ever passing by downtown San Rafael, it's definitely worth stopping in for a visit!
