For those of you who've been wondering how my knitting room is coming along -- well, let's just say that it's still a work in progress. But I have started to load up the Ikea Expedite unit with books and yarn. Here's a glimpse of the first few shelves.
I decided to put my "left-overs" into glass cookie jars that I found at the Container store. If I want to sort them out by yarn weight (which I think makes the most sense) I'm going to need a couple more jars. It's amazing how many of these wee bits of left over yarn I have.
I bought a couple of the larger linen drop-front boxes (Container store) for storing groups of like yarn. The one on the left is currently housing all my denim yarn.
The handmade pottery yarn bowl is an early birthday gift from my sister -- I carried it home on the plane from Toronto and was very relieved it made it to San Francisco "intact". Once the rest of the room is pulled together I hope to find a spot on the floor by my knitting chair where it can be used -- but it does look pretty on the top of the shelf.
Books are finding homes here for now. And that little wooden corking doll is a gift from a former neighbor. It was his grandmother's. The doll was made in West Germany. Isn't she adorable?
There's a LOT more work to be done in this room, it's sort of like knitting an afghan. Piece by piece I'm getting it done. Each piece is so pretty on its own, but it'll be a while before I can stitch them all together and have a finished room.
I had the purple canvas bins on hand, so I'm using those for yarn storage for now with temporary lables. I'm still trying to decide how best to group my yarn. By fiber? Weight? Color? How do you organize yours and why?

It looks great! My yarn is all in a storage bin at the moment, but I always think organizing it by weight makes the most sense, even if it looks prettier by color.
The yarn bowl is gorgeous!

OMG - I am in love! The cookie jars are particularly genius. Hope it's starting to feel like home. :)

You're making progress! It looks very attractive as well as practical.
I received the calendar from you today!! Thank you so much! I enjoy looking through the patterns and am still wondering how I'll approach this. Of course, in my usual impractical way, I thought I HAD to make everything!! ;) That's not going to happen! It's a wonderful gift.
Sending my sincere thanks.

How lovely! I will soon need to reorganize my yarn and books, and will use your effort as inspiration! Enjoy settling into your knitting room...

Just lovely! I really like the boxes with clear windows--makes it easy to see what's in there. And I love the cookie jars. Great way to store all the odd ends (although I'd be partial to storing by colour 'cuz I think it would look soooo purty).
Enjoy your lovely new knitting room! :)
