Ever since I knit the Picnic Afghan I've been wondering what I should do with the Rowan denim leftovers. Then this month I got the idea to knit them up in a scrappy garter stitch scarf and I absolutely love how it turned out.
I cast on 350 stitches on 4mm needles and just started knitting in garter stitch, just making up the stripe pattern as I went along based on how far I thought a color might go.
I knew that it would only shrink in length (not width) because that's how denim yarn works. But because I was knitting the scarf horizontally that meant that I had to make the scarf extra wide to allow for shrinkage in the width (which in this case is the length). Confused yet?
Anyway, it all worked out beautifully in the wash -- the finished scarf is 70" long (as predetermined by the number of stitches cast on 350 @ a gauge of 5 stitches to the inch). I knit until it was 5 " wide and it shrunk to just a snick under 4.5".
I love how it looks with my denim jacket. So yeah, I guess this is yet another knit I'm keeping for moi!
