One of my dreams has been to have a small room in my home where I could store all my knitting related supplies, tools, books etc. I call it my "future fiber studio" and it has been a rather lofty ambition up until now.
But here, in our temporary apartment, I've got some space up in our loft bedroom to create at least a small knitting nook.
The first step for me was to purchase an Expedit storage unit from Ikea. My husband helped me to haul it up there and get it all set up (isn't he the best?).
I chose this system because of it's flexibility. I like that I can add bins, baskets, bags, books, jars...storage containers of just about every description. The possibilities are endless.
I know some people just leave their yarn in the cubes "as is" but I don't like my yarn to get dusty. Others store it all in pull-out bins. I might use some of these, but I don't like all my yarn to be hidden and/or lumped together. So, I'm on the hunt for ways to keep the yarn dust free, and yet somewhat visible. Oh, and I want it all to look "pretty" too.
So far I have chosen 2 Milano drop front shoe boxes from the Container store which will be ideal storage for smaller quantities of yarn (I can store a sweater's worth in each one) and I love the clear plastic window that allows me to easily identify what is in there, plus it has a pull down tab with a magnetic close. It's pretty cool. And there's enough room left in the same cube for storing some knitting books.
My Sea Island Cotton (oh, you know I wasn't trusting that to the movers) came along with me in its' lovely acrylic box. I'm going to look for some similar boxes for my other cone yarns as I think it's a great way to display them dust free.
Have any other good ideas for storing yarn and other knitting related items on my new shelving system? I'd love to hear them.
How about tall jars, like for food storage? I bought my son some tall cylinders at Target to use as canisters.

I really like those clear bins. Looking forward to seeing your unit filled with all good things fiber and fiber-related.

Hello Joan, It's great to have your own space isn't it?...I love IKEA too!I have a large white cupboard from there with a drop down desk and it stores so much of my crafty bits and pieces.
My yarn is in lidded baskets but I can't see it and I'd like some other way to store it as I forget what I have sometimes! Shall look forward to following your progress!
Happy Wednesday,
